The European Community is dead…long live the European Union

After the ratification drama the Treaty of Lisbon has just entered into force. It may not be the best piece of legislation ever, written in a very clear fashion and filled with much desired rules. Like any law, be it national, international or EU, it is a product of political compromise. What had happened behind the closed doors is not our business here. As Bismarck acutely observed ‘The less the people know about how sausages and laws are made, the better they sleep in the night.’ What is our business, however, is how the Treaty of Lisbon will operate in practice. So, expect critical notes on this blog, questions to which we have no answers to and provocative arguments. The centre of gravity will be on case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union. At the same time the most important political developments will be reported too. The European Community is dead….long live the European Union!
